Allocation Table
The operating systems use FAT to keep track of which
clusters are allocated to which files and which are
available for use.
Firmware
Software stored in read-only memory (ROM) or programmable
ROM (PROM). Easier to change than hardware but harder
than software stored on disk. Firmware is often responsible
for the behavior of a system when it is first switched
on.
Flying Height
The distance between the read/write head and the disk
surface, made up of a cushion of air that keeps the
head from contacting the media
